Finding Dreamland: The Dubai Nights

I am tired. I want sleep. I just can't get it. Why is that? I am lying there in my bed, staring up at the ceiling, wishing sleep would come to me. I want to go to sleep. I want to go to that blessed dreamland, where you see exciting things, where you go on amazing adventures, where you remember things that are most important to you or troubling you. Why is it that I can't seem to take the passage down the path to it? Sleep, oh dear sleep, you are the way. It is said that you are what is going to get this person there. I give you whatever you desire. I give you comfort, I give you shade, I give you peace of mind, yet you do not come to me. What did I do wrong? Why are you punishing me like this? My eyes await your arrival and I am in deep pain. I can't stand to be separated from you any longer. Hours pass by and still I am hoping. I am getting sick, my dear. Don't you realise? Pardon me for I have gotten angry, I have thought why you don't like me. I have gotten ...

Polluted Ranches Lake Discovered by Resident

By Aisha Yaqub A polluted lake found in the Arabian Ranches community of Dubai, is in the process of being cleaned and the water purified, after a shocking discovery of a dead duck by residents led to questions being raised.  Residents of the three Al Reem communities in Arabian Ranches, share a common lake and people walk at the lake during various times of the day. On 2 8th March, Lubna Akram a resident of Al Reem 1 was walking at the lake when she found the dead duck.  “I was walking and sensed some pungent smell in the air. It was very intense. I kept walking and came upon a few ducks. When I saw closely, one was lying flat on its back. I thought it looked dead.” According to Ms. Akram, there was also abnormal white foam over the water in the lake, which she had never seen before.  “I have been walking at this lake from the past 4 years now and have never seen such foam floating on top of the water before.” she added.  Soon residents started raising questio...

Where is Poonam Pandey?

One of Kingfisher’s very own swimwear calendar model had vowed to strip in the stadium and in front of the Indian team in the dressing room, if India won the World Cup final against Sri Lanka and became World Champions. Her reason for doing this was to cheer the Indian team and excite the players to do well. A lot of controversy was created after her announcement, from both devout Hindus and Muslims in India, saying this goes against moral and cultural values. India battled it out against Sri Lanka on April 2nd in Mumbai to lift the World Cup and bring victory to the nation after 28 years, however Poonam Pandey has still not fulfilled her promise, and she has still not done what she had vowed to do. A lot of anticipation had been built, leading up to the Final, to see whether Poonam Pandey would actually go ahead with her plans. So far it seems the whole thing was a sham and a way to gain cheap publicity, since she is nowhere to be found. She has stayed very quiet...

Pakistan 'Pakistunned' Their Way In to the Semi-Final

Image
With a charge led by the Pakistani skipper Shahid Afridi, the Pakistani Cricket Team has managed to storm their way in to the semi-finals, after beating West Indies in the crucial Quarter Final here at the Sher-e-Bangla cricket stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Wednesday.  This is the first time the Pakistani cricket team has entered the semi-finals, since entering the semi-finals in England in 1999 and losing to Australia.   The West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first on a sluggish pitch and suffered the consequences. A Pakistani spin bowling attack spearheaded by Afridi, bowled West Indies out for 112, setting a target of 113 to win for Pakistan, a target Pakistan easily reached in the 21 st over. No one could believe the way the West Indies wickets fell and this is why the term ‘Pakistunned’ was coined and went viral on the social networking website Twitter. Thousands of Pakistanis watching the match worldwide, used the word Pakistunned, also referring to...

Pakistanis on Twitter

This is part of my thesis, it was originally supposed to be a literature review, but I have taken out in-text citations and chapter references, and basically turned it in to a blog entry/article. This is part of the over all bigger thesis of mine, where I am doing a research on Pakistani tweeters and their tweeting patterns and behaviours. Also how they react to news.  There are many Pakistani users who come to Twitter to just have a casual chat with their followers (people who read a person’s ‘tweets’) or just tweet their thoughts, or even share information. Pakistani twitter users can be divided in to sub-groups. There are people who mainly blog, then share their blog writing with their Twitter followers, there are people who casually tweet about their thoughts and random stuff, there are people that share informative links on Twitter, but all of these users do have something in common. They comment on news. Any disaster that happens, any abnormal news, some situation that i...

Citizen Journalism and Participatory Culture

Mass Communication's role has changed a bit since the invention of New Media or Social Media. Mass communication before basically involved a sender, a message, a medium and a mass audience. The purpose was to appeal to a wider audience and get your message across to as many people as you can. These days with Social Media, the purpose is not only to get your message across to as many people as you can, but also to get them to participate. Get them to interact with you, by participatory means. Shows like Britain's Got Talent and Big Brother, call for participation from the audience. This culture has mainly spread due to the Internet.  Participatory culture does not only mean people reacting to television programs and voicing their opinions about what they see, but it also means people coming together, collaborating, building ideas and this culture allows people with similar goals, ambitions and interests to connect to one another. This kind of culture has allowed, celebrities ...
